Q&A for the TOEIC® Listening & Reading Test Updates
A．There is no change in the total number of questions and in the testing time. The number of questions in Listening Section and Reading Section remains the same with 100 questions respectively. The Listening Section still takes approximately 45 minutes, and the Reading Section still takes 75 minutes to complete. The TOEIC L&R scaled score range also remains the same from 5 to 495 for the listening and reading tests respectively, for a total of 10-990.
A．ETS wants to ensure that the TOEIC L&R reflects current language use and measures the language skills that test takers need when they are placed in, or preparing for, positions in the real world. The updated version of the TOEIC L&R includes communication approaches and methods that have been used more frequently in the last 10 years.
A．The test updates include frequently used communication formats (e.g., text messaging and instant messaging) and conversations with multiple participants. The updates also place greater emphasis on connecting information across multiple sources; for example, what is seen in a visual image and what is heard in a related conversation.
A．As in the past, the TOEIC L&R is an English-language proficiency test for people whose native language is not English. It measures the everyday English skills of people working in an international environment. The scores indicate how well people can communicate in English with others in business, commerce, and industry. The test does not require specialized knowledge or vocabulary beyond that of a person who uses English in everyday work activities.
A．Yes.A scaled score of 600 on the updated version of the TOEIC L&R indicate the same level as the former version.
A．No.With the updates, the overall quality and difficulty of the TOEIC L&R remain the same. The updates to the test have been designed and developed by expert test developers to ensure the same test difficulty, test length/duration, question number, reporting scale and quality.
A．Yes.The Official Score Certificate remains unchanged with the exception of one additional Listening Abilities Measured: Can understand a speaker’s purpose of implied meaning in a phrase of sentence. This provides additional information for test takers and test users. The addition of the new Ability Measured does not affect a test taker’s overall score. The introduction of new question types supports the measurement of the new Ability Measured. The number of measured listening abilities has increased from four to five, providing additional useful information to test takers.
A．No, the test fee has not been changed. The test fee for the updated version of the TOEIC L&R remains the same, 5,725 JPY (tax included).
